And Welcome Aboard to all of our new subscribers! We're picking up more and more every day!

WOW! Check out that subscriber count up there at the top of the left sidebar! HOO RAY! We' finally passed the 1400 mark. That's one heck of a milestone for us.

Welcome Aboard to all of the new subscribers that have joined us since we have last published this e-zine.

As I told you in the last edition, we have several projects in the works for the upcoming months and one of them is adding some new features to this ezine.

As you read this edition, you'll notice that one of those new features is a section that I'm calling "Tech Tips". This section will be a regular feature in each edition and it will include tips on how to do all kinds of neat things with your website.

I'm also doing a bit of re-arranging of some of our regular features to give a slightly better look to this e-zine and I would greatly appreciate hearing your feedback on the "new look". You'll find the "feedback" link at the bottom of this section, just below my signature.

For example, in this edition you'll learn how to redirect your affiliate URL's using a META tag in your HTML code.

This little trick is really a nice way to hide an affiliate link that is waaaaayyyy too long and just plain ugly. It also helps to keep unscrupulous people from stealing your affiliate commissions.

This is also a really great way to hide a tracking link. As you probably already know, tracking links can be almost as long and ugly as an affiliate link. And when a lot a people see a very obvious tracking link, they won't even bother to click on the link.

If you would like see to this really cool little trick in action, just scroll down to the "What's New" section and click on one of the links you'll see there.

I'll get into more of the details on some of the upcoming projects in the next edition which is scheduled to be published on Friday, February 1st.

I would also strongly recommend that you keep a close watch on your e-mail inbox for some major announcements from TeeJay Enterprises in the near future.

Okay, I have written a couple of very interesting as well as informative articles for you in today's edition.

The feature article, "Good Password Tips and Password Management" will give you good information on how to handle your many passwords that you have for all of the different programs you use in your daily operations.

Good Password Tips and Password Management

If you conduct any business online or maintain a website to compliment your offline business, then passwords are a mandatory part of accessing the various programs and databases you have to work with every day

These days a single computer user may have dozens of passwords. If you use computers at your job you may need to access secured databases, local workstations and numerous accounts online and each is supposed to have its own unique password.

Though many people don't require a logon for their home PC, they will definitely have one for email or websites that they manage.

Here is a guide to assist you in strengthening your passwords and password techniques.

After reading this article you will know the following:

  • How to make good passwords

  • Good password practices

  • Techniques to manage all of your passwords

How to Make Good Passwords

Choose a password with the following criteria:

  • At least 8 characters in length

  • At least 1 number

  • At least 1 special character

  • Upper and lowercase

Passwords with difficult combinations make it harder for tools like L0phtcrack, Brutus, John the Ripper, Cain and Able and other password crackers to decipher your password.

When creating a password, don't use personal information such as birthdays, children names, or first and last names.

Avoid using words or phrases that can be easily guess or cracked with a "dictionary attack."

Do not use the same password on different systems.

If you work in a classified environment, passwords should be treated at the same level of classification as the systems they protect.

Good password practices

Never share your password with ANYONE including your Administrators, Help Desk personnel or System Administrators. IT professionals at your job or Internet Service Provider (ISP) will not normally ask you for your password.

If they do need it then you should give it to them in person and ensure you change it as soon as they are done with their task.

A common "Social Engineering" tactic used by malicious hackers consists of calling up unsuspecting users and pretending to be from the computer support staff.

Another tactic is to have trusting users e-mail the password or type it into what looks like a legitimate site; this is known as "phishing."

Be aware of your surrounding when you are typing your password.

Watch for "shoulder Surfing" or people watching what you type as you are entering your password.

If you use the web to access critical information (such as online banking, or medical information) ensure that the site uses some type of secured method of encryption.

You will know this if the site's URL begins with an "https." SSL and Secure HTTP are sometimes indicated by a tiny lock in a corner of the page.

If there is no encryption then it maybe possible for unauthorized users to view and/or capture the data you enter and later access the account using a "sniffer."

A sniffer is a tool that captures all "clear text" or unencrypted data. SSL and Secure HTTP encrypts data so that it looks like gibberish to tools like sniffers.


Techniques to manage all of your passwords

It is best to memorize your passwords however if you have literally scores of passwords from work, home, online business ventures and the bank and you do not have a photographic memory, you may want to write them down and keep them in a safe place, not in your wallet or purse.

This simple and practical task is what author of Beyond Fear, and system security phenomenon, Bruce Schneier, recommends as does Senior Programmer for Security Policy at Microsoft, Jesper Johannson.

Using Password Management applications such as Password Safe, a free Microsoft application for storing passwords, and Password Vault (also free) can help you to effectively manage your passwords.

Another management technique is to allow Windows (and other Operating Systems) to automatically fill in the data.

This is great for trusted SECURE environments such as home systems in which you do not need to hide any account information from anyone, but not such a good idea for the work environment.

It should also be noted that systems without a high level of Internet security (protected with firewalls, updated patches, NAT enabled, etc) should not use the auto fill features as the passwords are many times stored on the system in clear text making it easy for malicious code such as spyware, trojans and worms to steal your passwords and account information.

The greatest thing you can do to protect your password is to be aware that at every moment someone somewhere would love to access some or all of your accounts.

It is not always cyber criminals looking for your banking information, sometimes it is just curious people who happen upon your username & password.

It may even be someone you know.

Be aware or your surroundings at all times and be careful with your passwords.

Remember, they are how YOU access your information and if you do not protect them from prying eyes, someone else will be able to use them to access YOUR information !!!

How To Redirect Your URL Using A META Tag

There are many occasions when you wish to display your URL in the form yourdomainname/display.html but would like, instead, to direct visitors to another URL, let's say: some-other-domain/best-mouse-trap.html.

For example, you are promoting an affiliate program with the ugly URL like this: your-merchant-URL/sales-page/your-affiliate-code, and you think that the URL is way too long, or you want to hide the fact that it is an affiliate link, or you want to prevent people from stealing your affiliate commission, you could use this technique.

You could even check how many people have clicked on your affiliate link, by checking the number of clicks of the displayed URL before it is redirected, from your Web site log.

Here is an example to help you understand this a little better:

This is my affiliate link for the PushButtonPublishing program that I've been promoting since 2001:

http://www.pushbuttonpublishing.com/affiliates/t.php?rid=77  Pretty ugly, huh? Plus it's waaaayyy too long and it's quite obviously an affiliate link.

Now here is the tracking link I use to track my advertising:

http://www.teejayenterprises.net/cgi-bin/arp3/arp3-t.pl?l=10&c=689 Also pretty ugly, right? Also it is waaaayyy too long to even fit in some ad spaces and it is also quite obvious that it's a tracking link.

So, to help get rid of all of this obvious ugliness, I've set up a re-direct link that accomplishes what I've set out to do. I wanted to hide the very obvious affiliate link, but I also wanted to make sure I could still track my advertising results.

I set up the redirect link so that it sends people to my affiliate page thru my tracking link. Pretty cool, huh?

Here is another example.

You are using a tracking software, or a tracking company, to track your advertisement. Usually, the tracking URL will be in the form of: your-tracking-URL/.../tracking-?blah-blah or tracking-company-URL/.../tracking-?blah-blah.

You want to use your own domain name or you do not want others know that you are tracking the ad. You could use the URL in this format:
your-domain-name/your-sales-description which redirects visitors to the tracking URL.

Knowledge of the technique of redirecting URL will give you a lot of, among other benefits, flexibility.

Here is how to do it with a META tag...

Create the page, "display.html," with the following META tag between the HEAD and /HEAD tags in the HTML codes...

META http-equiv = "refresh" content = "0; URL = some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html" without any other content (if you wish, you could include the title "World's Best Mouse Trap" between the TITLE and /TITLE tags, to show that this page is about a mouse trap).

Upload the page "display.html" to the root directory of your Web site. With that done, when visitors click on the link: your-domain-name/display.html, they will be redirected to: some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html.

Please note that for the URL some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html in the above META tag, and other URLs through out the rest of the article, you should include the "http" protocol which have been omitted.

The following variation of the above method will give you a neater way of displaying your URL, namely, without using the ".html" extension in your displayed URL...

First create a sub-directory, say "best-mouse-trap" in the root directory at your Web site. Instead of naming the Web page created above as display.html, name it as index.html.

Upload this "index.html" file into the sub-directory "best-mouse-trap". Then, when your visitors click on the URL: your-domain-name/best-mouse-trap they will be redirected to some-other-URL/best-mouse-trap.html.

Choosing a Great Domain Name

The first thing you will need before you start your website is a domain name. This domain name is what people will type in their browsers and see at the top of every page of your website.

It'll look something like this: www.mywonderfulwebsite.com . Since your domain name is blasted all over the Internet, you want something that directly relates to what you are offering the public.

Some people don't realize that the .com at the end of a domain name is not the only choice. You could have a .org (organizations), .net (intended for Internet service providers), .gov (government departments), .edu (educational institutions or .biz (for companies).

There are some other lesser-known endings we won't bother exploring.

In addition, each country has its own code. The United Kingdom gets .uk, Australia gets .au, and so on.

The number of .com names that have not been claimed is rapidly dwindling. I doubt there are any English words.com remaining.

Because of the rarity of good .com names, it may be tempting to choose a domain name other than .com that is not the best decision. The .com names have the most prestige and therefore are much better for your image.

Here's your plan of action.

It can be a challenge to come up with a good .com name. There are people who monitor domain names constantly. They instantly buy up any single word domain name if it becomes available, so forget about single word names.

Your best course of action is to come up with a two or three word description of your website. You'll probably have more success with a three word name than a two so concentrate on that.

If you want to get ranked high in search engines, and who doesn't, think about what your potential customers would type into a search engine. This will require some thought. The obvious search terms may be taken. You might have to add the word "the" or "an" in front on your domain name.

After you've come up with several three word descriptive phrases, go to a domain registration service. Godaddy.com is a common one, but it certainly is not the only one.

A search on the Internet will give you multiple choices. Type in your phrase to see if it's still available. If you're lucky, you may be able to find an unclaimed domain your first several tries.

Pay your fee, register the name and you're now the proud owner of a piece of virtual real estate on the Internet.
